| Approaching one year of production and already boasting several
awards, ' You Are Here , the Cambridge Video News Magazine' announces
the premiere of its eleventh edition. The show was started by
volunteers in spring 2005, mostly members of Cambridge Community
Television (CCTV), who decided to provide an alternative to mainstream
commercial news.
"I think it is really important for the people of Cambridge to have a
news show the local issues that affect them, rather than the issues
chosen by the bigger commercial news stations." says Andrew Ott, a
founding member of the group. ' You Are Here ' brings viewers TV news
that is produced by the community, for the community. Anyone is
welcome to join and produce their own news story.
This month's show includes stories about the African American
Experience in Cambridge, a local amnesty chapter that organized a day
of human rights activism in New York, the annual central square
clean-up, the national "day of Out(R)age", where people protested
telephone companies' lobbying efforts in congress to change the
national telecommunications laws, and an announcement about the
upcoming river festival (see below for more details).
As every month, the premiere will be celebrated with a small screening
party open to the public. In an all-volunteer-run group it can get
tough from time to time to get everyone to contribute the work they
promised, so that often the final show gets finished just minutes
before it goes out on air. "I know the show wouldn't come together
without the support of a large number of people behind the scenes,
both within the group and also in the local access station, CCTV" says
former executive producer Matthew Fullerton. While final efforts are
still being made to get the current episode ready for its premiere,
the group has already started preparation of the next show, to be
aired June 26th, which will be a special edition celebrating the 1
year anniversary of the show. |
