Meeting Minutes July 25, 2005
Buz runs this week's meeting. Angel will run next week's meeting.
Announcements: Angel: Worlds fair will happen in September. No date set yet.
Andrew: Reporters Roundable set: Tues Aug 9th. Studio reserved. Hopefully same reporters plus Tab? Globe?
Andrew: Minutes misattributed some comments about criticism. On the record, andrew liked weather segment, liked the humor in first show. Some attributions were paraphrasing criticism of others.
Angel: Edible Arrangements feature: How to segment possibility on fruit arrangement. Story: Kids need things to do, fruit arrangement can be a summer activity.
Ann stepping aside from outreach role. We discuss how we can learn from Ann's experience.
Minutes: Read the minutes and put changes directly on wiki.
Agenda Approval:
We want to consider archival.
Andrew: lets discuss how we can start meeting AT 6:30.
Agenda approved.
Executive Producer Selection:
Jonah willing to fill the EP role. Lots of enthusiasm from group.
Andrew: will you kick our asses?
Jonah will tell people what they need to do. Wants to get the timing thing down.
We chose Jonah for the role.
<New possible group member stops by-- Kent. Possible project with a 2 month timeframe.>
Art director:
Ann expressed interest in art director role. Ann interested in starting in September. People express enthusiasm for Ann's art direction. People express interest in more shaping/definition of the Art Director role. We decide to discuss this further at a future meeting.
People express interest in having reference designs so others can just drop them in.
- We decide to ask Ann to write a description of Art Director role. (Set of bullet points like those on:http://youarehere.yorkhost.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Leadership_Roles
Outreach Director: Angel is nominated, we will formally announce the outreach director role.
- Jim will announce the outreach role.
Episode 2 Feedback:
We further discuss criticism, how we can do it constructively. Not be too nice, not just pick on pieces.
We discuss being "nice" vs suggesting possible improvements as the positive to balance criticism. Having each person say something positive and negative not realistic. More realistic to have group come up with positive/negative
Proposal: Set up criteria and give feedback in each area.
Jennifer uses the following for Summer Media Institute:
- Clear point of view
- Dramatic question
- Has a clear voice (Who is telling the story?)
- Effective use of sound (soundtrack, sound effects, do they fit)
- Pacing (are shots too long/short?)
- Emotional content/stake, integrity (Why are we watching this? Are we telling story we or those in segment qualified to tell?)
- Economy of story (tightness) Do we get it right away and then repeat, or is the length appropriate.
From memory of Edie's course:
- Is there a conflict?
We discuss integrity: Are the opinions of the people being interviewed relevant? Were authorities on issue interviewed? People interviewed should have a stake in story. Either direct involvement, or effected by issue.
Journalism formula: Who, What, Where, When, Why and How.
The How is the non-hard news part -- feature pieces.
Suggestion to put these on wiki.
Suggestion for criterion:
- Technical: Was appropriate equipment used? Was framing clean? Was sound leveling and video color managed well? Were transitions clean?
"The List" can be a structure for conversation: Leader of meeting can go down list and solicit comments on items. Both positive and constructive.
Possibilities: Could critique show immediately after screening. Could break into parts & critique at each meeting.
We decide to do full criticism at beginning of next meeting.
Producers meetings overlap with our meetings. Should we go? Should some individuals go & report back?
Some interest in switching the day/time of all news meeting. We decide to defer until 3 weeks from now (week before the next producers meeting).
Buz: Should bring in rough segments early (today would have been good) so we can realistically critique and finish.
Further discussion of timing of submission, timing of segments: idea: shooting and submission of b-roll good for fill.
Recall of timing of last episode: Tapes came in late (Friday deadline, Tapes came in on Saturday)
Discussing Timing of show, most producers wouldn't have a piece ready for the 8th for a 15th deadline.
Jonah pushes FINAL deadline for segments to 15th.
Jennifer volunteers to send out email soliciting segments to general CCTV membership, mentions that IndyMedia may be interested in submitting.
Discussion of how long segments should be. Jonah willing to hear segment ideas & will decide what there is room for. Other possibility is to make slots apriori, doll out to interested producers.
We decide on 2-5 minutes for segment length to solicit from general CCTV membership.
Segment possibility brainstorm:
Angel: More kids & fun Worlds Fair in September. May be good to have segment available for next show for airing in September.
Andrew: Reporters roundtable. (local reporters discussing top stories)
- Jim will email Andrew about city council member with bike-frendly platform.
Andrew shot an weather satire piece a couple of years ago, may be able to cut for this show.
Also potential for Political Weather.
City council elections: CCTV is covering, may be able to get footage.
- Need to ask for pieces from other producers not present.
Ideas for segments:
Buz wants a rant piece, but doesn't have a ranter. Jen: Production intern might be available for September episode. Possibility of FreemanZ doing rant.
Jonah: Possible piece: Wild Kingdom in Cambridge: Rats, Pigeons etc. Lloyd could show up in safari outfit.
Jen: Public access & telecom bill: Access funding threatened. Jennifer may involve people on MAC. Interview Comcast, CCTV Leadership.
Bigrit advocates pipelining segments for future episodes. Extending planning process for possible stories for farther future.
We will test planning episode 4 next week.
Proposal for longer-term calendar on wiki for upcoming events.
- Andrew volunteers to set up a time for hacking together a promo.
We push recruitment for a future meeting.
Meeting ends just shy of 9:00.
