You Are Here Meeting Minutes, 8/7/06, held in the 8th floor conference room

Present: Andrew P, Ann, Mayana, Birgit, Andrew O [hereafter referred to as Andrew], Matt, Terrence

Andrew P is new to the group. We welcome him and give him an intro to what we do and who we are.

First discussion is the lack of pieces:

Sams piece

- Will Ann take over it

- Terrence offers to help

- Where are the tapes?

- Ann would like to try and get it ready for this show, if not this then next

The Screening

- Discussion of who will bring what

- Terrence offers to bring lots of things

- Everyone will bring something - not necessary to bring huge amounts

- Drinks - Matt volunteers cider and we assume Buz will bring beer

List is:

Andrew P - Non alcoholic drinks

Andrew O - Hors de oevres

Matt - Cider

Terence - Meat imitation

Ann -

Mayana - Brazilian Cake

Birgit - Salad

[Editors note: Andrew will actually be away so someone else will have to bring the Hors. Also, rumour has it that Ann volunteered bread, but I didn't write this down. I must have been distracted...]

Mayana is leaving! We did spend more time discussing this and asking about Mayana's future than is implied by the single line comment here.

Terrence wants a hard disk

Outreach:

Flyer. Some small mistakes but we can add some details by hand, and get posting

Where do flyers go

Can we get a CCTV 'slide' on their channels when programs/streetcam isn't?

Email lists of people, including the producers group list?

The website

The CCTV newsletter often mentions us

Actions:

- Andrew will contact Renato and Jenn regarding a slide and an email to the producers group

- Mayana will call people

- Our brochure - Andrew will send the original to Birgit

Finally, Matt has copied the large video file from the hard disk to the just-fast-enough-to-play-DV laptop. This line is here by way of explanation as to why we are only reviewing pieces now.

Birgit and Matts piece, on the Zeitgeist:

- People like it, not boring

- Andrew doesn't like one dramatic transition

- Do we have permission? Sortof...

New segments:

Terrence would like to do a piece on Renato showing people how to use a radio station. Initially this sounds like a promo. Andrew wants more newsy. Mayana suggests grabbing a clueless radio wannabe and following them through. Terrence thinks this would be a news story. Andrew doesn't like the idea of actors. Terrence is positive and takes on board the comments.

Andrew raises CCTV relationship.

Terrence is keen for us to be quick to react to emerging news stories. If something takes place on Cambridge streets then he wants us to be able to cover it, to demand access and cover it. Real hard news. Andrew supports this idea. Terrence wants individualism/ community news output as he feels its very important right now. He's talking about this being a restrictive moment in history.

Right to speech.

Andrew mentions the lack of support for a difficult story. We have no legal dept. and therefore have some right to be frightened. No producer has any real assurance that the group will stand behind them.

Ann strongly believes the council could do us damage. Matt disagrees.

We go back to Andrew's suggestion that we shoudn't be promoting the station for the sake of promoting the station, but for news's sake.

Andrew has material to do part of a piece. He wants to follow a producer. He has interviews already. "Making of the news group" story. Please let andrew know if you are doing a story, and if you are willing to be followed. The background to this was the one year anniversary. He found new direction because of another anniversary piece. He could profile producers and make it a series! (Matt)

Birgit wants to make a new promo for the show. Going back to outreach I guess.

Matt passes on Edie's best wishes and story ideas.

Ann mentions Spike Lee and his Katrina piece.

Andrew P mentions the hot courthouse issue. Courthouse is getting too hot resulting in suspended hearings.

Ann reads a past list of really old stories: -A World News Show. --How many access news shows are there? Andrew suggests reserving 5 minutes in each show for another segment and sending one of ours to the people who send us one. - Paul wants to follow a profession

9/11 air date for next show? Terrence talks about the World Trade Center film, 9/11 and the growing mainstream authority of a conspiracy theory. There is debate about whether Hollywooding the 9/11 events is healthy. There will be flyering at a screening in Boston and Terrence would like it filmed. Matt initially agrees to do camera until he later finds out that its during the day at a busy point in his week.
