News Group Minutes - 9-19-05

Present - Jim, Birgit, Angel, Buz, Jonah, Ann C.

Announcements

Episode 1 was entered in the Video Festival in two categories, as discussed in the previous meeting. Buz, AnnM and Angel handled various aspects of getting this done.

There are lots of Episode 3 dvds left. If you want one see Buz. They are $2.00 each. [Update - Since they aren't selling well, I will take orders to determine how many to make for future episodes.]

Teresa at the Christian Science Monitor who interviewed some of the group at the previous meeting would like to meet with more of us. It was suggested she should talk to Ken and Corey since they were involved with initial planning and getting out the first episode.

Discussion.

More Lower Thirds. Buz suggested we should improve the look of our lower thirds. It's too late to change it for the next episode, but Buz and Jim will do some work with Final Cut and present the results.

Jonah is stepping down as EP, so we will need to chose a new one.

Angel brought up the issue of inactive members since only a few members have been producing episodes. Buz said this amounts to outreach. A long discussion ensued as to how to improve (or just do some) outreach.

Ideas included:

Print a flyer and place it in the lobby bulletin board, on the front windows along Prospect street, possibly elsewhere.
Put something in the CCTV Web site Discussion BBoard.
Get Jennifer to include something in the CCTV weekly email.
Arrange to have something in the CCTV printed and mailed (quaterly) newsletter.
Make a newsgroup recruiting PSA. I.e. an ad promoting the newsgroup to run in rotation at fill-in times on CCTV channels 9 and 10.
Put a segment or ad in the show itself - we now have just a text announcement after the credits.
Have a party.

Try to get the news courses back in the CCTV offerings.

Visit the last session of the multi session production classes - an old idea no one has gotten around to.

Talk to instructors of existing classes to get them to pitch us to their classes or to appropriate students, or the tip us off to likely members. Buz volunteered to take this on.

BeLive one off show advertising the show - showing clips and taking calls. Angel and Jim were interested in doing this. Birgit volunteered to make arrangements. [Eli Kao says yes there are slots available and he's the guy to contact.]

Variation - visit existing BeLive shows as guest. Angel has done this once.(?)

Arrange to get a plug at the BBQ. [Update - I think this didn't happen.]

All suggestions were generally liked but the party was the most popular so it was resolved that the next meeting is to be a party with the airing of the next episode.

SO - BE SURE TO COME and BRING FRIENDS next MONDAY. Feel free to bring additional food. Short meeting at 6:30, party at 7:00.

Party assignment/volunteers

Update from Wednesday's edit session - Intros, Council Candidates, Eatin' Cheap, Wild Cambridge and Interstitials are on hard disc The timeline is about 20 minutes with these inclusions. Send ideas on segment order to Buz or Jim or drop by cctv Sunday afternoon.

Future segment ideas.

Jonah - Telephone Tag shot with people on street.
Make a segment with footage already shot asking people on street to ask questions for candidates. Not much enthusiasm for this.
Skul bicycle club - Jonah still may do this. Footage available.
Council Candidates - part deux. Ann C is doing this for next show.
Jim has potential bicycle riding interstitials already shot.
Birgit has an idea for a serious piece on Alewife Development issues.
Ann C - badly placed bus shelters.
Council Meetings and resolutions, etc.
Footage of News Group at work for interstitials, or piece on news group.
Senior Center/Green Decade meeting.

Respectfully submitted, Buz
